HE SPEAKS THROUGH US

The spiritual belief of the American Indian holds that all things have a spirit and that the Great Spirit can speak to him by this means.  They also believe that the particular strength of an animal can be transferred to an individual by means of a successful hunt, dream or related article made into a medicine charm or bag.  Richard Wallace has captured the spirit that dwells as seen by Native Americans.

SITTING BULL

The most admired of all the Indians that gathered together in 1867, the year that spelled disaster for George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry, was Sitting Bull.  Not a chief, but a powerful medicine man and a warrior, he commanded power.

Richard Wallace has captured the essence of the man, who like many before and after, was subjected to the broken promises and suppression of an uncaring governement.

ALATTI HAYOI

'ALLATTI HAYOI' translated means 'Always Here.' Richard Wallace has captured the continuing spirit and pride of the native American. This is reflected in the face of Saginaw Morgan Grant, a professional actor who was used as the subject of the drawing.  Like many people everywhere, native Americans have not lost their pride of heritage.  But from generation to generation the heritage is passed on and rises above hardship and suppression.

RED SHIRT

Not much is know about Red Shirt except that he was of the same tribe as Sitting Bull - that of the Hunkpapa Souix.  He was at the Battle of the Little Big Horn and was typical of the warriors of the period of the 1860's. He was a chief and followed Sitting Bull until the Surrender to General Miles of the U.S. Army.  Richard Wallace has striven to show the pride and defiance of the warriors who face inevitable and overwhelming odds at the hands of the U.S. Army.

RED CLOUD

The most successful chief and warrior of all the U.S.-Indian Wars in the West, Red Cloud not only defeated the army at almost every turn, but forced the U.S. Government to his terms for a peace treaty.  Richard Wallace has captured the young warrior, in his Three faces of Red Cloud and Oglala Sioux War Chief.
